GROBE'S NURSERY AND GARDEN CENTRE is an independent family-owned retail garden centre and Christmas shop that is looking for a personable individual to join our garden centre and nursery team as Nursery and Garden Centre Labourer.
Working with and learning about the growing of plants of every kind and sharing your enthusiasm for them with our customers in interesting, fast paced, physical and filled with variety - and there’s nothing quite like being outdoors to see the beauty that you will see develop around you on our 6-acre location as a result of your efforts. After 63 years in operation, we are always trying to be even better.
Main Duties:
- Load, unload, and transport plants, materials, and supplies manually or using equipment
- Prepare soil, plant seeds, bulbs, cuttings, and transplant seedlings, shrubs, and trees
- Water, prune, fertilize, and maintain the health of annuals, perennials, and woody plants
- Monitor plants for pests, diseases, or deficiencies, and assist with pest control
- Set up, monitor, and adjust greenhouse and outdoor irrigation systems
- Maintain clean, safe, and organized nursery areas, planting beds, and workstations
- Assist with setting up seasonal displays, grading fresh cut Christmas trees, and maintaining retail presentation standards
- Provide basic customer assistance including plant care advice, Christmas tree sales, and loading purchases.
- Operate and maintain tools, carts, and light nursery equipment as required
Employment Requirements:
- Completion of secondary school is required.
- College-level courses in horticulture, greenhouse production, landscaping, or a related field are considered strong assets.
- Minimum of three (3) months of recent previous experience working in outdoor, physically demanding environments.
- Prior experience in nursery, greenhouse, landscaping, or horticultural settings, particularly in tasks such as:
- Planting, watering, pruning, and transplanting
- General care and maintenance of annuals, perennials, herbaceous plants, and evergreen shrubs
- On-the-job training will be provided to develop any additional horticultural or customer-service skills needed for the role.
- Must be in good physical condition and capable of lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods throughout the workday.
- A demonstrated interest in learning plant care techniques and expanding horticultural knowledge is valued, as the employer supports employee growth and continuous improvement.
- Must be able to work independently and collaboratively in a positive, team-oriented environment that prioritizes safety and professionalism.
- Familiarity with basic gardening tools and light equipment is an asset; however, training will be provided as required.
Terms of Employment
Position Type: Full-time position
Wage: $19.50–$22.00 per hour (depending on experience)
Hours: At least 42 hours per week; Monday to Friday, weekends as needed
